Have you ever ask yourself how often should puppies poop? Puppies are one of the cutest animals in the world. If you went to a pet store without the intentions of buying a pet and just move around, you will eventually be convinced to get a puppy. This is exactly what happened to me. I had taken a friend of mine to window shop at a pet’s store. Just moving around, a very adorable puppy got my attention. He looked at me with those puppy eyes and I was forced to get him. So when we got home, the first thing I noticed was that he pooped on my carpet. I felt like returning him but he was too adorable to lose. I, therefore, knew that I had a responsibility.
So I dived into knowing how often should puppies poop?
Although this is not that accurate, from my research, I found out that most puppies will poop and pee at least 5 times a day. This is just an overall view but there is actually a way to know how often should puppies poop. Below, we will be looking at how you can understand your dog’s poop habit and train him. Stay tuned.

Basically, How Often Should Puppies Poop?
Like I said earlier, most puppies will poop at an average of 5 times a day. These results are not as accurate because dogs are not the same. They are different species of dogs, different sizes, different age, different health and different levels of being playful.
Am sure you know where am heading with this. I want to say that the number of times your new puppy poops will depend on the breed of the dog, the size, the age, the health and how much exercise your puppy does.
Just like babies, puppies also do not have control of their bladder. They will, therefore, excrete within an hour. I found an interesting fact while researching that you can estimate how many times your dog can hold it by their age in months. A one-month-old dog can hold it for 1 hour, 2 months old will hold for 2 hours. From 3 months, you add an hour so a 4-month-old can hold it for 5 hours.
Unfortunately, puppies do not follow a schedule whenever they poop. For instance, one can poop every 5 hours, one can poop after eating or after waking up. There is no pattern and no rules. But you can watch your puppy carefully and after a while, you will know that your dog will need to go poo:
- your dog is looking for something?
- your dog is spinning
- “nervously” sniffing the ground?
Although all puppies are totally different individuals you can easily learn how to control the situation. Find out here the best name for your puppy male!
How Long Does It Take For A Puppy To Poop After Eating?
With dogs, you will definitely have to come up with a routine, especially for puppies. The routines will help reduce the mess. So after eating, puppies will eliminate at different times depending on the factors we have talked about.
Some will poop right away after eating, some after 30 minutes and this might go to up to an hour. So it is wise if you understand your puppy. After defecating, feed your dog and take him out. Keep an eye on him while timing. Make this a routine and your dog will get used to it.
Mostly, you should take about 5 to 30 minute then take him out.
How Often Do Puppies Poop At 8 Weeks?
At 8 weeks you now have an old puppy. At this time, I had already established a routine for my puppy and I knew what I expected from him. He had also learned that he shouldn’t pee on my carpets.
At 8 weeks, I started to potty train him. So to know how many times you puppy defecates, just use their age to determine. At 8 weeks, your dog is 2 months old. He will defecate approximately every 2 hours. Most puppies will do it 30 minutes after eating and they will eat two to four time a day. Just start training him the first day you get him. That way, you will have an easy time understanding him.
How Often Should A 12 Week Old Puppy Poop?
At 12 weeks, your puppy is old enough to eliminate on his own. By now you should have started potty training him. Dogs will urinate more often than pooping. He should, therefore, know where to do it. Dogs are brilliant animals and they are quick to learn. At 12 weeks, he is 3 months old. From our simple mathematics function, this, therefore, means that he will poop approximately every four hours. My dog did it 4 times at this age. To avoid small messes inside the house, train him. Don’t leave yet. I will tell you how you can train him so stay tuned.
How Can I Establish Normal Poop Habits?
This is very simple to do. From my research, I found that establishing a normal poop habit requires discipline. By discipline, I mean that you should be around your dog most of the times and you should be consistent. The first thing you should do and what I did with my puppy is having a regular feeding habit/ schedule and taking the food away between meals. I then took him out every morning and once every 30 minutes. Take him out after meals and after naps also. Each time, I took him to the same spot to poop and I would reward him after. This is the easiest way you can establish a normal poop habit.
How Can I Potty Train My Pup?
I started to potty train my puppy when he was 8 weeks old. Do not follow what I did. Potty training should start the first day you get your puppy. Potty training is very important. It will save you a lot. What will help you a lot is consistency with your training. So the first day you get your puppy, introduce him to his sleeping area. After that, you should take him to where you want him to potty. Puppies learn a lot faster so long as you keep them on habit. When he wakes up, do not greet him until he has used his bathroom. Each time you take him to potty, use only one command. You should use the same way every time you take him to poop. Following this consistently, your puppy will be fully trained in weeks.
Is It Normal For Puppies To Poop A Lot?
Your dog poops 4 or 5 times a day and you probably think this is too much. I myself though my dog did it a lot. So how much is a lot for puppies to poop? A normal puppy will poop between 2 to 5 times a day. But this will vary depending on the size of the dog, the dog’s diet and the age. Do not compare your puppy to an older dog. A puppy will poop more frequently. Considering that the dog is eating, it is natural that the dog defecates. If your dog does it more than 5 times, try to figure out what is wrong. It might probably be a change in the diet or change in environment.
FINAL THOUGHTS
